Phrasal verbs

Sei que esse é um assunto meio chato, mas que pode ser muito útil.

Vale lembrar aqui que elas não podem ser traduzidas ao pé da letra e muitas vezes não fazem muito sentido pra nós, que não temos o inglês como nossa língua materna.

Aqui vão algumas delas:

  • ANSWER BACK – reply to someone rudely
  • BLOW UP – explode
  • BREAK DOWN – stop functioning
  • BREAK IN – interrupt
  • BREAK UP – come to an end
  • BRING UP – raise children; educate
  • CALL OFF – cancel
  • CALM DOWN – become calmer
  • CATCH UP WITH – reach
  • CHEER UP – become happy
  • COUNT ON – rely on (confiar)
  • DROP BY – visit casually
  • DROP OUT – stop attending; quit
  • FIGURE OUT –calculate; understand; imagine
  • FILL IN – complete
  • FIND OUT – discover
  • GET AWAY – escape
  • GET BACK – return
  • GIVE IN – surrender ( render-se)
  • GIVE UP –desist
  • GO ON – continue
  • GROW UP –become an adult
  • HOLD BACK – control (feelings)
  • HURRY UP –move faster
  • KEEP ON – continue
  • LOOK AFTER – take care of
  • LOOK FOR – try to find
  • LOOK FORWARD TO – antecipate with pleasure
  • PASS AWAY – die
  • PICK UP – come to get someone (in a vehicle)
  • POINT OUT – indicate
  • PUT OFF – postpone (adiar)
  • PUT ON – gain weight (engordar)
  • PUT UP WITH – tolerate
  • RUN OFF – print;make copies
  • SHOW OFF – try to attract attention
  • SLOW DOWN – reduce speed
  • THROW AWAY – discard (jogar fora)
  • THROW UP – vomit
  • TRY ON – put clothes to test for size
  • TURN DOWN – refuse (recusar)
